Botox

Botox or Botulinum Toxin A is a popular non-surgical injection that temporarily reduces or eliminates wrinkles.  Botox works by blocking chemicals in the body that cause muscle contraction.  It has been approved by the FDA for use since 1998 for blepharospasm (uncontrolled blinking) and strabismus (misaligned eyes).  However, in 2002 this approval was expanded to the cosmetic treatment of glabellar lines (frown lines).  The treatment has also been used improve the appearance of crow’s feet, forehead creases, and neck bands.


About the Procedure:


The Botox procedure a simple 10-minute treatment consisting of a series of low-dose injections.  The procedure causes minimal and temporary discomfort.  Results can be seen within a few days of the treatment and may last up to four months.  Ninety-seven percent of patients who were surveyed reported satisfaction with the results of their Botox treatment.


Risks:


It is uncommon for the Botox recipient to have any significant side effects.  There may be some bruising at the injection site, but this is temporary and may be covered by makeup.  Possible side effects include headache, respiratory infection, flu syndrome, temporary eyelid droop, and nausea.  Botox should not be used if there is an infection at the injection site.
