Botox and Restylane – Injectables

Botox

Botox (Botulinum Toxin A) is a popular non-surgical injection that temporarily reduces or eliminates wrinkles. Botox works by blocking chemicals in the body that cause muscle contraction. It has been approved by the FDA for use since 1998 for blepharospasm (uncontrolled blinking) and strabismus (misaligned eyes). However, in 2002 this approval was expanded to the cosmetic treatment of glabellar lines (frown lines). The treatment has also been used to improve the appearance of crow’s feet, forehead creases and neck bands.

Restylane

Restylane (non-animal-based hyaluronic acid) is another popular facial injectable used for smoothing wrinkles and improving facial contours. Restylane received the FDA approval in 2003, and it has since been successfully used for improving the appearance of facial lines and wrinkles, especially those around the mouth and nose. Most of our Restylane patients see significant aesthetic improvement within a week, and the results typically last six months or more.

Botox / Restylane Procedure

Both Botox and Restylane procedures are simple, convenient 10-minute treatments consisting of several low-dose injections. The injections typically cause minimal, temporary soreness. To improve patient comfort, our doctors might administer local anesthesia prior to the treatment. The results of Botox / Restylane procedures can be seen as soon as a few days after the treatment and typically last for several months. In a recent survey, 97 percent of Botox patients reported satisfaction with the results of their treatment.

Botox / Restylane Risks

It is uncommon for Botox or Restylane patients to have any significant side effects. There may be some bruising at the injection site, but this is temporary and can be covered by makeup. Other possible side-effects include headache, respiratory infection, flu syndrome, temporary eyelid droop and nausea. Injectables such as Botox and Restylane should not be used if there is infection at the planned injection site.
