Dr. Norman Woodlief is the anterior segment surgeon and Vitreo-retinal specialist at VisionAmerica of Montgomery. Dr. Woodlief specializes in cataract and refractive surgery and the treatment of vitreo-retinal disorders such as diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration. He has practiced ophthalmology since 1984 and has performed nearly 21,000 cataract procedures.

Having practiced ophthalmology for 24 years, Dr. Woodlief has remained on the leading edge of medical technology. He performs a wide spectrum of advanced refractive procedures including the use of the intraocular collamer lens (ICL), multi-focal implants to correct presbyopia, blade-free LASIK with IntraLase, and astigmatism correcting implants. In addition to his expertise in refractive technology, Dr. Woodlief is on the forefront of retinal treatments including the use of innovative intraocular pharmacological agents as well as traditional laser technologies. His commitment to providing cutting-edge treatments recently led him to study vitreo-retinal surgery in Vienna, Austria.

Dr. Woodlief graduated college magna cum laude in math and biology and was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society. His medical degree was awarded from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. Dr. Woodlief then completed his ophthalmology residency at the prestigious Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia where he won the James Shipman Award for excellence in eye research. Following his residency, Dr. Woodlief was selected for the highly regarded retina-vitreous fellowship program in at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, University of Miami, Florida.

Dr. Woodlief has lifetime board certification from the American Academy of Ophthalmology and voluntarily re-certified by testing and review in 2005. He is also certified by the American Board of Eye Surgery. Other professional memberships include the International and American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, the American Society of Retina Specialists, the American Medical Association, and the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Dr. Woodlief has been voted by his peers to be listed in the respected and comprehensive medical referral book, Best Doctors in America since 1996 with the most recent citation in 2007-2008.

In addition to his professional affiliations, Dr. Woodlief is a supporter of ministries that show forth the love of Christ through excellence in eye care. He has performed surgery at Kissy UMC Eye Clinic in Sierra Leone, West Africa, the Lighthouse for Christ Eye Center in Mombasa, Kenya, and Cap Haitien, Haiti. In June 2002 Dr. Woodlief completed his Master of Arts in Theology from Fuller Theological Seminary.

Dr. Woodlief is married for 33 years and has three children, three grandchildren, and a son-in-law and daughter-in-law, all who are very dear to him. He is an instrument rated pilot, pianist, and has co-developed software for tracking surgical outcomes. He also has an active interest in age management medicine.
